High School Opera Field Trip:
Our wonderful high school student will be treated to an operatic production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella) on March 1st. I am very excited because this is the same production that I was in when I went to community college! Miss Christiansen will be substituting while we are gone.

Library Day:
Our next library day will be on Monday, March 8th

Classroom Updates

Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
I am currently cracking down on sloppy penmanship. The students seem to be rushing through their seatwork during the day. I have been marking similar things on their papers, but instead of working on these aspects they are rushing to complete the papers. I have warned them that they will redo any papers that are sloppy or that continue to repeat the mistakes I have talked with them about.

The reason I want them to redo their papers is so that they realize that practicing poor penmanship teaches their muscles poor penmanship. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me by looking over their penmanship on homework. Thank you!

I currently have not received the paper copies of the scholastic order forms. This is frustrating to me, and I am sorry about it. You can still order books online if you would like. I will e-mail you the class password if you have forgotten it.

 Miss Christiansen: Room 1
On Friday Miss Christiansen will be doing a Science Experiment Day with the students! Yay!

Classroom Updates

Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
On Tuesday we had our Park Cleanup Day at Carl Miller Park. The students had a blast, and we were able to help make the park look a little cleaner. We gathered several grocery sacks full of garbage, and a whole garbage can full of large twigs! It was a lot of fun. In recognition, parks and recreation has given each student a pass for a free day of swimming at the Mountain Home swimming pool! Here is the website with information about when the pool will be opening: http://www.pr.mountain-home.us/pool_page.htm. We had so much fun that I am thinking that we will have another park clean up day in the spring.

Also, I would like to do the Heinz Ketchup contest, but I need your permission to use your student’s name and grade level. Please send an e-mail to my personal inbox giving permission unless you have already done so.

Tomorrow I will not be at school. Miss Christiansen will be covering the morning hours and Mrs. Hamilton will be covering the afternoon. All students will have Jeans Day. Enjoy your weekend, and God bless!

Miss Christiansen: Room 1

Next week on Friday I would like to do a science experiment day! I think that they will like to do something other than art once in a while. If any parents have a science experiment idea, I would love to get ideas.  My email is turtluvr@msn.com. Please email me ideas!

Also, next Thursday we will be going over the picture that I picked out! It’s Martin Puryear’s Ladder for Booker T. Washington. This is an abstract picture, and I’m really excited to see how they react to a different concept other than the normal kind of painting.

Today, Feb. 18th, Mrs. Rubino got a DVD about art and the first segment is about color. So I decided to go over all the pictures we have done and talk about the differences in all the pictures and what the artist was trying to make you feel by using dark or bright colors.  Yet again they were so receptive to all of it!  I even had them draw/color a picture and they had to do either dark-blocky colors and shapes or bright and realistic colors.  I was so excited when a few students did an abstract looking picture. It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool!!!!!!! =] On Friday I will be seeing everyone ALL morning long! I’m excited! See everyone then!

Classroom Updates

Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
This week I have two updates. The first update is that I am working with the students on improving their spacing in their penmanship. There should be a lowercase “m” worth of space between each word. Thus, your child’s lowercase “m” will determine how much space he or she needs. When I grade writing tests I usually measure a lowercase “m” I find on their papers and use that to determine whether their spacing is correct or not. We went over this again this morning and wrote some practice sentences. Spacing is a difficult aspect of cursive so I am asking the students to remember to work on it during their daily work also.

Also, I will be having the students enter a contest to design a new ketchup packet for Heinz. In order to submit our entries I have to put the children’s names and grade levels on the sheets. If this is a problem for you, please let me know. If you want more information on the contest you can go to the website at
http://ketchupcreativity.com/. It should be a fun activity for the students. We will most likely be doing this activity next week, and it’s a secret so don’t tell! J

Miss Christiansen: Room 1
On Friday last week it was just Anna and I. We had a blast! She got all her work done ten minutes early so we played connect four, and of course she beat me. Haha! This week in art appreciation we are doing “Looking Down Yosemite Valley” by Albert Bierstadt. It is such a beautiful pictures that Miss Miya picked outJ.  Also, on Friday we will be doing a floating and sinking experiment with vinegar, baking soda, and rice in water. It should be very exciting for them! I’m also hoping that we can play some Go-Fish and a memory game. I’m very excited for this week!

Classroom Updates

Mrs. Rubino: Room 2 This has been an exciting week for the students. Tuesday was our Day 100 Party. We watched Bolt, made a graph of jelly bean colors, and had popcorn! Today is our dental health presentation. On Friday, Miss Christiansen will be subbing for me.  Papers went home on Monday about the Scholastic book club. I am still waiting for the book forms to arrive in the mail. However, I do not believe that you need them if you are anxious to order right away. J

Just a quick reminder to be checking your e-mail frequently. Now that I have internet access at school I often send e-mails throughout the week when I think of updates.

All students have Jeans Day tomorrow. :) Yay! Have a wonderful weekend!
