Oct 28th Newsletter Administrative
Notes upcoming events:
Parent / Teacher Conferences: Grade forms were sent home today
for the first quarter. This means that Thursday and Friday of this week (October 29th and 30th) will
be conferences! We will release the students at 1:30. If you have not already done so, please sign up for a time slot for
teacher conferences. The sign up sheet is posted on the door between the two classrooms. All parents are requested to schedule
a conference. If the posted schedule does not allow you to attend, please contact your child’s teacher and we will schedule
a special time.
Discovery Center Field Trip: On November 3rd, we will travel to Boise for a field
trip to the Discovery Center. This will be an all day field trip since we will need to arrive by 9:30 for a presentation on
Idaho Ecosystems. Cost of admission will be $2.50 per person (children and adult chaperones). If the weather is nice we are
hoping to take a sack lunch and eat in the park. With November weather being so unpredictable, we also need to plan to bring
extra money in case we need to eat lunch nearby. As is customary, jeans day attire will be appropriate for our field trip.
Be sure your child’s permission slip is turned in.
Canned Food Drive starts next week! November
marks a month of thanksgiving at Shiloh Christian School. The PTFS will be collecting canned foods to be donated to Mountain
Home Senior Center. The food drive will be from November 2nd through the 20th.
Reading incentive program:
Most of our parents have expressed a desire to find a reading incentive program to substitute for the Book-it program which
we were unable to do this year. Look for future updates, we have found a program that starts in February.
Letters to Veterans:
November 11th
is Veterans Day and Mrs. Rubino is organizing our students to write letters to thank 10 veterans at our local American Legion
Post. What better way to show our thanks to our servicemen and women, than to show Christ’s love to them. She will take the letters to the
post personally on the 9th or 10th of November.
Thanksgiving Celebration: November 24th will be the last day of class
before the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will have a small program and Thanksgiving meal at noon. PTFS has graciously taken on
the task of coordinating the food while our teachers will be organizing a short program. If you have a particular talent (drama,
music, art, decorating, etc.) and could help the children prepare decorations or help with the program,
please contact Mrs. Shaw. policies and procedures:
Late Work Policy Adjustment: After reviewing the handbook, one minor adjustment has been made. Rather than requiring
students to stay after school on Friday afternoons to complete all unfinished late work, students will be required to attend
help class on Wednesday between 2:45 and 3:20. This will be mandatory even if the assignment will receive a zero.
Classroom Updates Mrs. Shaw: Room

We don’t want the cold weather to trap us inside any earlier than necessary. Please be
sure your student brings a warm coat for recess. Hats and gloves will also help us bundle up against the chilly wind. On extremely
cold days, we are eating our snack indoors before we bundle up for outdoor activities.
Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
Brrrrr! It’s getting cold outside. Please remember to have your child bring a warm coat to school every day.
Hats may be worn during recess, but not in the school building. The Discovery Center field
trip is approaching quickly. For this field trip we will be split into groups. Each group will be involved in an activity
while at the center. I will give this activity and a time schedule to each driver on Tuesday morning.
Our exams are almost over and conferences are coming up. We have conquered one quarter already! Students will be changing
jobs and seats next week in honor of the new quarter. I’m sure that they will be excited. We will also be doubling up
to make up for the Queysmaze field trip earlier this month. I am excited to tell you that we
will be beginning a reading program mid-January! I will keep you posted with more details as soon as they become available.
Have a wonderful weekend!!!!!

It seems like the smallest of tools, but we are discovering a problem with pencils! Many of our
students are finding the lead is broken inside, throughout the entire length and sharpening them only leads to shorter, broken
pencils. We are now looking to see which brands seem to be the best quality. We have already discovered that the inexpensive
or decorative pencils are of no use. Check with your child, many of them are already running out of useable pencils. Some
students have mechanical pencils and these write very clearly but most of them are already out of lead. If you have had good
results from a particular brand, please let me know and we will recommend them. There has been
some confusion caused by the second grade spelling worksheets. I do not usually send these home until they are completed but
those rare occasions can be very frustrating. This is one book that A Beka has not updated their format. The worksheet pages
will be numbered between 1 and 65. On one side is a list of spelling words, usually with three or four fill-in-the-blanks
on the bottom. The other side has several blanks to fill in but nothing seems to work from the list. Indeed, the reverse side
is NOT the correct list for these questions. It is actually the NEXT week’s list. I want to thank those
diligent parents who go over each page of seatwork with their children. This reinforces both the things they learn and the
value that you place on their education. I am sorry for any stress or frustration this might have caused.
Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
This week has been difficult for room 2. Everyone seems to have gotten sick at one point or another during the week.
I would like to send a big thank you to Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Hamilton for subbing for me this week on such short notice.
The Discovery Center field trip is approaching quickly so I wanted to let you know about the science store. The DC
has a science store with all kinds of educational “toys” that students can purchase. Their website has a link
to the store that shows some of the options they have available. I am not sure how updated the website is, but here is the
link: www.scidaho.org/discover/sciencestore.php
My students know that their planners and ANY homework that was completed at home must be turned in to me every morning BEFORE
class starts. Unfortunately, not much work has been coming in. Some students are doing an excellent job at this, but others
find it difficult to remember. I have treated the first quarter, more or less, as a grace period. From this point on, they
will forfeit morning recess for not turning in their planner and homework into the bin. I am also
struggling with late work. The Shiloh handbook has a detailed policy on late work. According to policy, late work will receive
either a lower grade or a zero, but must be completed, no matter what. Currently Mrs. Shaw and I are working
on some of the more intricate details of the policy and will get back to you as soon as we clear these with the board. Thank
you for your patience.
With first quarter almost over, I am asking my students to step up and start taking more responsibility. I know that
they are capable, and I am working to enable them to be more independent. For example, today we had an excellent workshop
on how to study. Since 9-weeks exams have already begun, I thought it would be a good way to help guide the studying process.
Students were given several tips and a basic plan for attacking subject matter. It was a lot of fun.
Have a great rest of the week and weekend!!!!!

- The Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser was a wonderful event, thanks to everyone who participated. Mrs. Fitzgerald
spearheaded the event but the entire PTFS and all of the students made this event a success.
Reminders: · For those planning to attend the board meeting, this has been rescheduled
for October 19th. It will be held at the school at 7 p.m. Classroom Updates Mrs. Shaw: Room

Cold and flu season came upon us quickly this year, along with the sudden change of weather. As with any classroom,
illness can spread quickly. We are reinforcing the idea of covering your cough and using hand sanitizer. We use hand sanitizer
liberally; not only should each student should have their own, but I also have a large bottle on my desk. Please help us prevent
the spread of these illnesses by keeping your student at home if they have a fever.
Second grade students have reached a penmanship milestone. We will no longer be using pages from a cursive writing
tablet. Instead, second graders will use regular wide ruled paper. I have a couple of packages of this paper in stock to start.
If your child does not have wide ruled paper, please send with them by the first of November. Congratulations, second grade.
Mrs. Rubino: Room 2
Hello all! This week I don’t have many updates. The most important update is that nine-week exams are coming
up. For many of the students these count as a quarter or even a third of their grade. I will try my best to review with them
the day before the tests, but most studying needs to be done in class and at home. Because of these exams, I have chosen to
not double up until later in the month when the quarter is over. (The doubling up would be for the awesome field trip we had
recently.)
Thank you all for all that you do to help. I would like to thank Mrs. Hieb for volunteering to substitute for me this
Friday. It is extremely helpful. J

Oct 7th Newsletter Administrative NotesMrs. Shaw: Principal Upcoming Field Trips: QueysMaze Our first field trip is tomorrow! We will have a regular length school
day but we don’t leave for QueysMaze until 11:15 a.m. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately for hours
spent outdoors. We will be eating our sack lunches at the farm, shortly after we arrive. Thank you to Mrs. Paslay, Mrs. Hall,
and Mrs. Fitzgerald for being our parent drivers. Be sure your student brings a sack lunch and the appropriate cost of admission
as well. We will return to Shiloh before regular pick-up time. Just a reminder: cost of admission is based on each student’s
grade; up to third grade will cost $3.00, fourth thru sixth will be $4.00 and older students will be $5.00. Parent chaperones
have an admission cost of $2.00. There are also larger pumpkins for sale so you have the option of sending a few dollars extra
to purchase one of these. They are a better price than your local supermarket and it gives the students a more experiential
relationship to the agriculture of our region.
Discovery Center On November 3rd, we will travel to Boise for a field trip to the Discovery Center. Room 2 has already received their
permission slips, room 1 will send out slips on Friday. This will be an all day field trip since we will need to arrive by 9:30 for a presentation
on Idaho Ecosystems. Cost of admission will be $2.50 per person (children and adult chaperones). If the weather is nice we
are hoping to take a sack lunch and eat in the park. With November weather being so unpredictable, we also need to plan to
bring extra money in case we need to eat lunch nearby. As is customary, jeans day attire will be appropriate for our field
trip.
Reminders: · Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser is coming up on October 9th.
Be sure and return all unsold tickets for an accurate head count. Contact Amanda Fitzgerald if you want to help or have any
questions. Classroom Updates Mrs. Shaw: Room

This is just a continued reminder that the change in our weather seems to be lasting. Please be sure your student brings
a jacket to school as we are still going outside twice a day. The weather will eventually force us indoors but we are attempting
to make use of the outdoors as long as possible. Please
be sure and read Mrs. Rubino’s information below on November activities. Both classes will participate in the canned
food drive as well as the letters for local veterans.
Mrs. Rubino: Room 2 Welcome to October! Time is flying and we are already
taking our first field trip tomorrow. Yay! Please remember to have your students
at school at 8 A.M. They are excited for the last hour before the trip as we will be reading White Fang!!! Since
today was early release I wanted to remind everyone that Help Class is still available. Help class is for any student who
would like extra help in any area. Please let me know if your child will be staying for help class so that I can plan accordingly. You
may have heard about the new daily schedules in room 2. I have created detailed schedules for the students in order to provide
a more definite structure. I am hoping that these schedules will help the students stay on track. If you would like to look
at these schedules, they are on the back of the door that separates room one and two. I would also like
to inform you of two upcoming activities. November is a time to think about the multitude of blessings that the Lord has given
us. In keeping with this theme of gratitude, Shiloh will be participating in two volunteer activities during the month. Veterans
Day is November 11th so we will be writing letters to ten veterans here in Mountain Home. I have contacted a woman
at the American Legion Post, and she has told me that these veterans could use a “pick-me-up.” I will take the
letters to the post personally on the 9th or 10th of November. PTFS will also
be running a food drive. If you would like to participate please bring in non-perishable items. These items will be delivered
to the senior center in town. The senior center donates food to “Meals on Wheels,” an organization that prepares
hot meals and delivers them to the needy. I am excited about these projects. I know that our students will
really enjoy the opportunity to serve those in need. Let’s have an entire month of Thanksgiving!

Upcoming Field Trips: QueysMaze Field Trip Permission slips have been sent out. Please return
these as soon as possible. On October 8, we will be going on our first all school field trip of the year. We will be going to Queysmaze
for fun on the farm. We will experience a hay ride, the corn maze, a hay pyramid, and each student will receive a small pumpkin.
The farm is located next to the Bruneau Sand Dunes State park so we will need parent drivers. We will be leaving Shiloh at
11:15. If you can be one of these parent drivers, please contact Mrs. Shaw or Mrs. Rubino. Please bring a sack lunch so we can eat as soon as we arrive in Bruneau. After lunch,
we will learn about Idaho and about the foods grown on our local farms. We will have plenty of time for all the activities
and still arrive back at school in time for parent pick-up. Cost of admission is based on each student’s grade; up to
third grade will cost $3.00, fourth thru sixth will be $4.00 and older students will be $5.00. Parent chaperones have an admission
cost of $2.00. There are also larger pumpkins for sale so you have the option of sending a few dollars extra to purchase one

Sack Lunch

On November 3rd, we will travel to Boise for a field trip to the Discovery Center. Be watching for a permission
slip. J
Reminders: · PTFS meeting will be held on Monday but will be at the home of Sandy
Hall instead of at the school. · Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser is coming up on October 9th. Be sure and return
all unsold tickets for an accurate head count.

Just a little reminder that fall weather has suddenly come upon us. Please be sure your student brings a jacket to
school as we are still going outside twice a day. The weather will eventually force us indoors but we are attempting to make
use of the outdoors as long as possible. Progress Reports went
out on Tuesday morning. Please return the bottom portion of the form to acknowledge that you have received it.
Mrs. Rubino: Room 2 Our class has been working on a fun project. I have been reading
White Fang aloud. It is a classic that none of us have read before (including me). After each reading students write
a short summary. The students are really enjoying this group activity and I am excited about the learning that is taking place. I also wanted to inform you of a classroom policy that has to do with quizzes and tests. Students are allowed 5 minutes
per test or quiz to refresh their memories before actually taking the quiz or test. I feel that this will help them remember
what they have studied. It will also encourage them to be prepared and study ahead of time. Feel free to let me
know if you have any questions or concerns. I am always available on Wednesdays after school. I can also meet with you at
another time if you would like to schedule an appointment. Thank you for supporting your children in their academic success.
